Scholar, researcher, and former organizer Daniel HoSang joins Ejeris for a deeply clarifying conversation about how people can be drawn to movements that also target their communities. Daniel challenges the idea that shifts toward MAGA among communities of color are simply about misinformation or a political conversion. Instead, he points to a breakdown in civic life where people have lost connection to the institutions and communities that once helped them make sense of the world.

This conversation explores how we talk to the people in our lives being pulled toward MAGA, why shame does not work, and how rebuilding trust, connection, and collective life may be one of the most important strategies we have in the fight against rising fascism.

About Daniel

Daniel Martinez HoSang is Professor of American Studies at Yale University and founding director of the Center for Applied Research on Democracy. His research examines race, democracy, the multiracial right, and the ways political movements build community  and belonging amid declining institutional trust. His forthcoming book, What the Left Gets Wrong About the Right (Haymarket Books, 2027), draws on more than a decade of field research to challenge conventional explanations for the right’s expansion  and consider how the left might rebuild collective political life. He is also co-editor, with Joseph Lowndes, of The Politics of the Multiracial Right (NYU Press, 2027), and author or editor of several books on racial and conservative politics, including A Wider Type of Freedom and Producers, Parasites, Patriots. A 2024 Freedom Scholar and 2026 Carnegie Fellow, HoSang has written for The New York Times, TIME, The Guardian, and The American Prospect and has collaborated with labor unions, educators, and community organizations for more than three decades.

Ejeris is a political strategist passionate about strengthening liberation movements and building community safety. Ejeris serves as the Fascism Barometer's "movement meteorologist," exploring the impact of fascist movements on communities of color, queer and trans communities, and all marginalized people. Having worked for the past twenty-five years at the intersections of racial justice, LGBTQ liberation, anti-violence, transformative justice, and economic justice movements, Ejeris focuses on creating political and strategic experiments to strengthen social justice movements through the organization Ejerie Labs.
